When you’re a student on a student budget, you’re always looking for ways to make a quick buck. Sometimes an idea to pops up, and we capitalize on that. Sounds like something out of one of our dreams, right? Well, it sure as hell is a reality for a Wits Student who made her childhood hobby a business.
I was lucky enough to discover Reitumetse, brains and hands behind CheCro, when I walked to Res (Student Residence) one day and laid eyes on a poster advertising this business. Instantly, my interest was piqued. Wouldn’t yours be, if you saw a poster advertising crochet Crop Tops? So I followed her page on Instagram and then slid into her DMs, where we had a conversation about her business.
Crocheting and knitting are two hobbies that most youth frown upon but for Reitumetse, she turned it into something lucrative. For her, it was about making something girls would like, something trendy and away from the bohemian style that crochet offers. Since crop tops happen to be a fashion craze that has stayed, it became the main concept of her business.
In terms of pricing, she is a student who understands student struggles and so her products are well within the student budget; a bargain for those with solid salaries. For handmade tops that are part of a collection, she charges between R80-R210. Custom orders might be pricier, since she needs to pay more attention to detail. If interested, place your orders via Instagram.
