South Africa received an interesting Valentine’s Day gift this year in the form of President Jacob Zuma’s resignation. The president held a press conference late on Wednesday evening to announce his decision.
Mr Zuma’s presidency held many a scandal over the course of nine years, including State Capture and most notably, the president’s home at Nkandla.
The ANC gave Mr Zuma an ultimatum this week, stating that he would be voted out by motion of no confidence should he choose not to resign. Mr Zuma faces a multitude of corruption charges.
Ramaphosa Is Now Acting President – According to Section 90 of the Constitution, when there is a vacancy in the office of president, which there is after Zuma’s resignation, the first person in line to act as president is the deputy president.
