TCHINDAS – SOUTH AFRICAN PREMIERE – 23 SEPTEMBER 2017

In this multi-award winning documentary film from Spain, directors Marc Serena and Pablo Garcia Perez de Lara travelled to Cape Verde to explore the lives of the transsexual community in the city of Mindelo in the run up to its annual carnival. The film centres on Cape Verde’s most famous transgender activist: Tchinda Andrade.

“She was the first to open the way for others to express themselves,” says Serena. “Tchinda is a natural leader.” She has been so influential that the trans community in Cape Verde are referred to as “tchindas” by locals.

“It’s very special to premiere the film in South Africa with Jozi Film Festival. It gives another perspective of the continent and we hope people from Jozi will love it”, said Marc.

#ITMovie Pre-screening at Ster-Kinekor

#ITMovie, #Skarefest, Ster-Kinekor, IMAX, Cinema, Pre-screening, Eastgate, Theatre, Popcorn, Pennywise, Horror, Late Night Screening

The cauldron and dome-like setting of Ster-Kinekor’s IMAX theatre was ideal setting for the horrific late-night pre-screening of #ITMovie, one week before the actual movie release. The feeling of dread, horror and anticipation was masterfully imagined and executed by Ster-Kinekor, as patrons took in every moment of the unique experience. There was an optimistic feeling in the air, shared by all attendees and lucky invitees. This was because as soon you step foot into the Ster-Kinekor cinema the theme of the night, “are you brave enough for our pre-screening of this year’s most terrifying film?” was made explicitly apparent as well as the pre-screening itself dubbed late night because of its 22:00 start time. Patrons had a marvellous experience, with Pennywise himself hovering in and around the venue, delighting members of the crowd.

“Everyone came out in droves to catch Pennywise himself on the big screen” #ITMovie #Skarefest

The movie itself is not for the faint of heart but promises to be a feast for senses for horror movie buffs. #ITMovie is based on Stephen King’s novel of the same name. The film is set in the Town of Derry, where the local kids are disappearing one by one, leaving behind bloody remains. The film is intended to be the first instalment in a planned duology. In a place known as “The Barrens”, a group of seven kids are united by their horrifying and strange encounters with an evil clown named Pennywise, whose history of murder and violence dates back for centuries. The kids are bonded by their determination to kill it. The horror and terror can truly be appreciated on the big screen as the kids walk through a scary tunnel and peer through the sewers where IT lives, even if you wanted to look away when the horror unfolds, you won’t be able to take your eyes of the screen. Jaeden Lieberher and Bill Skarsgård star as Bill Denbrough, and Pennywise, the Dancing Clown, respectively, with Jeremy Ray Taylor, Sophia Lillis and Finn Wolfhard in supporting roles.

Recap of the Last Week

Last Week, Week, The Bizniz Talk, The Bizniz Hustle, Kenny Kunene, Bafana Bafana, Happy Jele, #ORTambo100, OR Tambo Centenary, Coverage, The Citizen

Last week began with the news that Orlando Pirates defender, Happy Jele had been arrested by the Gauteng Traffic Police High Speed Unit on the morning of Monday, the 4th of September 2017. Jele was travelling on the M1 near Sandton, averaging a speed of 223km/h, exceeding the prescribed limit of 120km/h. The Orlando Pirates defender was arrested on the spot and formally charged for reckless driving and exceeding the speed limit.

After suffering an inconspicuous defeat away to Cape Verde on the 1st of September 2017, Bafana Bafana and fans alike were slightly deflated and amiss as the hopes of Bafana Bafana making it to Russia 2018 were left jaded, but with 3 qualifying games remaining and a crucial reverse home game against Cape Verde themselves on the horizon, Bafana Bafana and fans realistically maintained optimism that Stuart Baxter’s men would make the necessary strides toward the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia as 3 victories from the remaining 3 qualifiers would ensure that Bafana Bafana top their group in the qualifying rounds, leaving the national team only one more round of fixtures away from an improbable world cup finals. Naturally, this meant that stakes were elevated to fever pitch high as the 1st of the 3 remaining qualifiers, the reverse home game against Cape Verde at Durban arched Moses Mabhida Stadium on Tuesday the 5th of September 2017, was a must win. To no ones apparent surprise, Bafana Bafana lost at home 😊. Truthfully, the only surprise was that the public was surprised at the national football team’s seemingly never-ending let downs.

Businessman, socialite, self-proclaimed politician, Kenny Kunene unsettled most when news reports from The Citizen broke out that the multiple club owner had miraculously come out scot free after he was attacked and shot at an incredible 21 times, with all 21 questionably bullets misfiring. Kenny Kunene told The Citizen by phone on Tuesday night that he was approaching Corlett Drive in Sandton near the M1 when a group of men in a white Lexus SUV pulled up, “I reversed to get away. When I hit the pavement, they came and shot at us. The cops say they have found 12 bullet casings at the scene.”, he claimed.

Friday, 8 September 2017 marked 50 days to The OR Tambo Centenary – #ORTambo100. The South African government duly celebrated the auspicious occasion by organising a panel discussion at the SABC Radio Park Auditorium, hosted by Nick Hamman (5FM), Masechaba Ndlovu (Metro FM) and Nigel Pierce (Good Hope FM). The showcase movie of the festival is My Mother’s Wound. This ambitious drama is directed by Ozan Aciktan and draws attention to the remnants of the Bosnian war. A gripping tale of family, love and identity, My Mother’s Wound follows Salih as he searches for a trail of hope amongst war-torn lives. Upon turning eighteen, Salih leaves the orphanage to find his lost family and begins working in a Serbian farm. Suddenly, at the most unexpected moment he has found a home. Will he ever be able to let go of the ghosts of his past and be happy in this new life? As tension escalates disquieting secrets surface.

Unique Life, a comedy film from Çağan Irmak, one of Turkey’s most beloved and popular filmmakers, tells the story of Nadide, who is searching for happiness after the death of her husband. Now over 50, Nadide once chose marriage over college and a career and struggled to keep her family together. After losing her husband, Nadide reads an article in the paper and decides to enrol in college. Inspired by the novel of acclaimed writer Cengiz Aytmatov, The Girl with the Red Scarf is a classic and endlessly watchable love story that never dates. It is said, in fact, that the French poet Aragon described The Girl with the Red Scarf as “the world’s greatest love story”. What is love? What makes a lover? What makes a spouse? What makes a father? And which is harder: to go back or not to go back?

Eyvah Eyvah 2, comedy, is the second instalment of the Eyvah Eyvah Triology. Hüseyin, a clarinetist from a village in Turkey’s Thracian region, is a young man living with his grandparents in a village in Turkey’s Thracian region. Two things are of great importance in Hüseyin’s life: his clarinet and his fiancée. In the first film Hüseyin was forced to go to Istanbul and leave behind his beloved village in order to search for his real father, teaming up with an eccentric nightclub singer, called Firuzan. After finding his father, Hüseyin tries to reach his fiancé, who moves to a small village in the Turkish countryside.

Husband Factor, is the story of Efsun (30) seeking true love and a romantic relationship rather than a husband. She is the black sheep of her peers and the women of her family who are programmed for marriage. She is seeking love yet she does not know what most girls know; how to strike an attitude, or how to manipulate a man. Hence, she has not had a single steady relationship to date. The good news is that she has her family to fall back on. Her family members are all dedicated to initiating Efsun into the intricacies of womanhood and ensuring that she gets hitched into the “happily ever after”. Efsun surrenders herself into the capable hands of these women.

All screenings will be free to public. Tickets can be booked and collected at the participating cinema box-offices one hour prior to each show. For more information, and booking details, visit the Cinema Nouveau website at www.cinemanouveau.co.za.

The teenagers are “hired” by an old master Master Wu, and become ninja heroes at night, defeating monsters and riding vehicles and dragons to protect the far-away land of Ninjago and its capital city. By day, these teenagers are ordinary students struggling against their greatest enemy: high school. Meanwhile, the warlord attempting to conquer Ninjago, Lord Gammadion, must cope with the fact that one of the ninjas is his son.

The film stars the voices of Justin Theroux as Lord Garmadon, Jackie Chan as Master Wu, the wisecracking leader of the group, Lord Garmadon’s brother and Lloyd’s uncle. Olivia Munn is the voice of Misako, Lord Gammadion’s ex-wife and Lloyd’s mother.

Gene, a multi-expressional emoji, sets out on a journey to become a normal emoji. The 3D computer-animated comedy film is based on the emoji symbols.

It stars the voices of T. J. Miller, James Corden, Anna Faris, Maya Rudolph, Steven Wright, Rob Riggle, Jennifer Coolidge, Christina Aguilera and Sofía Vergara. Gene lives in a teenager’s phone in Textopolis, a digital city inside the phone of his user Alex. He is the son of two meh emojis named Mel and Mary, and can make multiple expressions despite his parents’ upbringing.

Upon receiving a text from his crush Addie, Alex decides to send her an emoji. When Gene is selected, he panics, makes a confusing expression, and wrecks the text centre. Gene is called in by Smiler, a smiley emoji and leader of the text centre, who concludes that Gene is a “malfunction” and therefore must be deleted. Watch the animation come to life and team up with Gene and other emojies in a race to beat Alex to a store to have his phone erased.

This animated film’s run time is 87 minutes.

Buying your first car? Here’s what you need to know

First Car, Independence, Insurance, Minor, Students, Spring Day

But there’s more to having a car than late night food runs. There’s monthly repayments, insurance, maintenance, fuel… the point is, if you’re building yourself towards your goals, it’s really foolish to spend 80% of your salary on a car repayment and the other 20% on Unleaded 93. No part of a legitimate hustle suggests wasting money.

First thing to consider is cost. For most people, this is going to be the most important factor. Are you planning to buy a new or used car? The advantages of buying new are that you’ll know that the car will be reliable because you’ll be the very first owner and that it will come with a warranty should anything break down. New cars also tend to come with new features and gadgetry that ranges safety to entertainment, and are also manufactured to be more environmentally friendly. The drawback of a new car, however, is that it will probably be quite expensive – and don’t forget the tax.

First Car, Independence, Insurance, Minor, Students, Spring Day

If you’re looking for a used car bear in mind that while they are cheaper, you do run the risk of never truly knowing the car’s maintenance history or how many dead bodies have been in the boot (Only kidding. Mostly).

And insurance. If you’re under 25, your premium will be higher because insurance companies believe that younger drivers are less experienced, tend to drive faster than the speed limit and are more likely to be involved in accidents. But it is a necessity that you don’t want to be without.

First Car, Independence, Insurance, Minor, Students, Spring Day

Now how do you pick the car that’s right for you? Identify the car’s purpose. If you’re a student travelling to campus during the week or are someone who has to parallel park outside of your office, a small city car is ideal. If you spend your weekends being one with nature, you might need a 4×4. If you carpool, or have a family, a sedan might be best.

While buying a used car is much cheaper because of the smorgasbord of makes and models, that also means that there’s more to be aware of when shopping around and test driving. If you’re not exactly savvy on mechanics, take someone with you who knows a lot about cars.

What you should check on the car:

  • Are there any dents?
  • Can you tell if the paint is mismatched anywhere? (This indicates if the car has been in an accident)
  • While test driving, can you hear any noises like clunking or spluttering?
  • Does the car veer to the side while driving?
  • Check the mileage, especially if the car seems to have had more of a life than the mileage lets on. It might have been turned back.
  • Is there still enough tread on the tyres? South African law states that tyres need to have a minimum of 1,6mm tread depth.
  • Make sure that the airbags have never been deployed. Often when an airbag has been deployed a car is written off.
  • Test the brakes while driving the car.
  • Check the engine and underneath the car where it is parked for stains – this indicates a leakage.
  • Ask for the car’s roadworthy certificate and its service history.

It’s also imperative to realise that just because the dealer seems charming and eager and oh-so-helpful, that that doesn’t necessarily translate into trustworthiness. Remember that under the Consumer Protection Act, the dealership must disclose any defects to you. Choose a reputable dealership.

When you’re picking a car, take safety into consideration.  There are a lot of high risk cars that increase your chances of being a victim of theft, hijacking or a smash and grab. Research cars that don’t pose that much of a risk.

You also need to seriously think about fuel consumption. The heavier your choice of car, the more fuel it’s going to need, because the engine will be bigger. And the faster your car, the more it will burn through fuel. Of course anyone could say that it all depends on how, rather than what, you drive, but maybe give your wallet a fighting chance by adding a smaller engine to your list of choices.

If your car comes with a motor plan – good for you for the next 3-5 years. If it didn’t because you bought it out of motor plan or privately, save you later headaches by finding a reputable mechanic. Because, I promise you this, something will break. And if you’re not careful, it could cost you a small fortune to fix. Especially if, like me, Car is not one of the languages you speak – and it is not a language you want to learn from a mechanic who’s teaching you words like catalytic converter and carburettor while simultaneously haemorrhaging money from you.

Ster-Kinekor Gold At The #LOERIES2017

Ster-Kinekor and its creative agency FoxP2 Cape Town, were awarded for the heart-warming CSI campaign that saw a young man, Philani Twala, from Katlehong on the East Rand, receive a double corneal transplant – and a second chance to live his best life.

“Being recognised yet again for our heart-warming #OpenEyes campaign is a huge honour for the marketing team at Ster-Kinekor Theatres, and our creative agency, FoxP2, together with Ogilvy Public Relations JHB and Juice Content, whose integrated collaboration on this project resulted in this award-winning work,” says Motheo Matsau, Chief of Marketing and Sales at Ster-Kinekor Theatres.

The 2016 #OpenEyes campaign told Philani’s story – for the past 10 years, he has been suffering from an eye condition that had made him almost completely blind. However, he could not afford the treatment to restore his vision – a costly double corneal transplant.

The #OpenEyes campaign followed Philani’s emotional and uplifting journey to regain his sight, following the sponsored operations. It then called on all South Africans to share in his journey by nominating the film he should watch as his first ever, big screen cinema experience. The film that was chosen was Avatar.

The #OpenEyes campaign forms part of Ster-Kinekor’s CSI programme Vision Mission, a dedicated programme focused on healthy eye care in children. Moviegoers can opt in and donate to the programme when booking tickets online or at the cinemas’ self-service terminals.

“CSI is not just a good to have activity for corporates, it’s a necessity because of the good impact it has on ordinary community members. We need to consistently do good for the good of others while being mindful of our deeds as an organisation,” motivates Matsau.

Matsau adds: “The #OpenEyes campaign placed another side of the movie industry in the spotlight. A side that focuses on the importance of healthy eyesight and vision as essential senses to appreciate the magic of the big screen. The campaign certainly got South Africans talking and voting for their favourite film for Philani to watch, while creating awareness for a plight that affects thousands of other ‘Philani’s’ across our country.”

The campaign recorded 50 million online impressions with an earned media figure of more than R14 million, more than twenty times the campaign budget. Twala was featured on the front page of The Starnewspaper, among numerous print and online articles, and appeared on SABC News, Talk Radio 702 and Cape Talk, to mention a few broadcast platforms. During the campaign period, donations to Vision Mission increased by a staggering 60%.

Philani was at the Ster-Kinekor offices on Tuesday, 29 August 2017, to share more about life through his new set of eyes.
