Black Hippy is an American hip hop super-group from South Los Angeles, California, formed in 2008. The group is composed of West Coast rappers Ab-Soul, Jay Rock, Kendrick Lamar and ScHoolboy Q. Black Hippy was constructed after all of its members had signed to Carson-based indie record label, Top Dawg Entertainment (TDE).

Kendrick Lamar

Arguably the best TDE artist, rapper Kendrick Lamar is a ¼ of rap quartet, Black Hippy, which consists of fellow TDE stable members Jay Rock, Ab-Soul and ScHoolboy Q. Kendrick Lamar’s first studio album was Section.80 (2011), which was released after he signed with fellow Compton legend and hip hip mogul Dr Dre. Section.80 was followed by a one of a kind hip hop album good kid, m.A.A.d city (GKMC) in October 2012. The release of GKMC was an instant success, with the album viewed as one of the greatest hip hop albums of all time. In March 2015 Lamar managed to better the iconic status of GKMC with the release of To Pimp A Butterfly (TPAB) which accrued worldwide acclaim. Following the release of TPAB, Kendrick Lamar was nominated for 11 Grammy Awards in February 2016 (winning 5), falling second place behind Michael Jackson for the most Grammy Award nominations in one night. MJ had 12 Grammy nominations in 1984. Later in 2016 Lamar released a mixtape, untitled unmastered, which the rapper claims consists of the songs he’d initially recorded for TPAB but failed to make the final cut. In April 2017 Kendrick Lamar released his latest album DAMN., which has already proven to be a hit amongst listeners, critics and the charts. Before releasing his first studio album Section.80, Lamar released an EP in 2009, The Kendrick Lamar EP and a mixtape in 2010 O.verly D.edicated.

In 2014 Ab-Soul released his third studio album, These Days…. His latest album is Do What Thou Wilt., which was released late in 2016. Ab-Soul is known for his introspective and philosophical lyrical analogies.

The album was spearheaded by hit singles such as Collard Greens (feat. Kendrick Lamar), Man of The Year, Break the Bank and Studio respectively. ScHoolboy Q’s first studio album however, was Setbacks which was soon followed by his second studio album, Habits & Contradictions, with the biggest song on the album being Blessed (feat.
